Smiddycroft
Smiddycroft

Featuring several gardens specializing in hostas and other perennials as well as our potager garden called Lismorn. We maintain more than fifty raised beds where we grow lavender and garlic. Other features include orchards, a plant nursery and bookshop.

Smiddycroft has existed since 1991 and became a nursery specializing in perennials and operated by Smiddy the Elder and Smiddy the Younger. In 2008 it was relocated to its’ current site and is managed by Smiddy the Younger, William Smith and Smiddycroft Sal, Sally Lichtenberg. We are located in southern Bruce County about halfway between Kincardine and Walkerton. Our farm, fifty acres in size, has several large swamp-forests, outliers of the Greenock Swamp as well as 30 acres of fertile farmland. Since our arrival we have created numerous gardens featuring a lot of hostas and other perennials. In close proximity to our house we have established perimeter beds around the house, a middle-garden, a front garden, a hillside hosta garden and a unique ‘blue-garden’. We planted two orchards; the front orchard and the back orchard where we grow 3 varieties of disease-resistant apples. Thirty-six beds of lavender (5 varieties) and

15 beds of garlic (15 varieties) are also worth seeing. Lismorn (Lichtenberg-Smith Ornamental Kitchen Garden), our potager garden, started in 2020 features a combination of vegetables, herbs and flowers.

In our nursery we grow hundreds of hosta varieties in 4 large shade-houses. Under, below and around our Smiddyhuts, our own creation, we grow a variety of perennials that Smiddy has selected over the years for their hardiness and long period of interest. We also feature a bookshop stocked with garden books and other non-fiction selections. In the same building we offer some of the products we make here from our apples, lavender and garlic.
