The present site of Earth Bound rests at the 'Old Hea(Hay) Farm' in Red Bay (North of Sauble Beach and Wiarton on the Lake Huron coast).  This 5 acre parcel of land was used for decades as a market garden. The land lay fallow for 15 years before our work began. The front acre has been laid out for display gardens and is an ongoing project. Many types of soil and light conditions within the acre offer a variety of growing challenges. The yards around the house have been restored and two cold frame greenhouses have been erected. Herbs and perennials are available for sale in the greenhouse area.

At Earth Bound, we garden using xeriscaping techniques. This means "dry land gardening" and employs use of heavy mulching, choice of plants according to soil and moisture conditions and very little or no watering. Every year we add about 900 bags of leaf mulch to our gardens. This also helps cut down on the weeding! The summer of 2005 brings exciting additions of ‘wild’ rare lilies to our shade gardens as well as several structural additions. Over 90 colours of lilies potted and in bloom present a rainbow of colour throughout July and August! We like to share our knowledge as well as learn from other gardeners so if you are an enthusiast interested in working in our gardens for trade in plants call us for details. We would enjoy having shared energy in our land.

Who We Are

John Close Hon B. Sc. (Agriculture); Plantsman - University of Guelph. John is blessed with great growing skills and employs his background knowledge in germinating and propagating our plants. His creative endeavors can be seen in his arbors, follies and trellises scattered throughout the property.

Brenda Sutherland and Judy Larkin, 'Weeders of Renown', are involved in transplanting, research, marketing and presentations. Judy and Brenda have had long term interest in gardening and herbal uses. Brenda enjoys the physical aspects of gardening and the joy of unusual plants, while Judy studies their historical, magical and medicinal properties. Both enjoy giving presentations about the many uses of herbs.

All three members of Earth Bound and their children welcome you to come for a visit. There is a beautiful beach just down the road and two lovely fens to explore within a 5 minute drive.

Our commitment to conservation, preservation and living an integrated lifestyle with the earth we work in is apparent throughout our gardens, greenhouses and gift shop. We support organic practices, use xeriscaping and permaculture techniques and recycle as much as we are able.

Experienced horticulturalists John, Judy and Brenda welcome you to their gardens where they are on site to assist you with your gardening questions and needs.
